KUCHING: Sarawak has recorded a significant milestone in the 2024 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) results, with the state’s Average Grade Point (GPN) improving to 4.84 from 4.92 the previous year – the best performance since Bahasa Melayu and History were made compulsory pass subjects in 2013.
Sarawak’s Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, announced the achievement yesterday and congratulated the 32,239 candidates from Ministry of Education schools across the state for their outstanding performance.
“I would like to extend my congratulations to all Sarawakian students, as well as teachers, parents, and all parties involved who contributed to this success,” he said during a press conference held at The Waterfront Hotel today.
He highlighted that the improvement was evident in both urban and rural areas.
“Rural candidates recorded a GPN of 5.11 compared to 5.18 in 2023, while urban candidates improved from 4.54 to 4.46,” he shared.
He also noted that 28 schools in the state achieved a full 100 per cent pass rate – a rise from 19 schools the previous year.
Additionally, 821 students scored straight A’s, up from 726 last year.
Overall, 94.11 per cent of candidates qualified to receive the SPM certificate – nearly a 1 per cent increase from 2023 – marking the best performance since the implementation of the revised certification requirements.
Core subjects such as English showed the most improvement, with a 0.18-point increase, followed by Science and Mathematics.
Among Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects, Chemistry saw the highest leap with a 0.40-point increase.
Meanwhile, 67.72 per cent of special needs candidates successfully earned their SPM certificates – a 1.87 pe rcent improvement compared to the previous year.
