KUCHING: The improved performance of Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2025 candidates in Sabah and Sarawak reflects a valuable national asset.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Sabah and Sarawak Affairs), Datuk Mustapha Sakmud, said the achievements recorded this year were encouraging, with both states showing significant progress across key indicators, including overall academic performance and pass rates.

In Sabah, Mustapha highlighted a notable improvement in the State Grade Point Average (GPN), which rose from 5.00 to 4.85, marking the first time the state moved out of the GPN 5 range.

“This is a historic achievement for Sabah’s education performance,” he said in a statement today.

He added that the percentage of candidates eligible for certificates also increased to 95.60 per cent, while 605 students obtained straight As.

The number of candidates achieving at least a credit also rose significantly.

According to Mustapha, the progress reflects not only quantitative improvement but also better quality outcomes, including a reduced achievement gap between urban and rural students.

Sarawak also recorded positive progress, with its GPN improving to 4.79 – the best performance since 2013.

A total of 853 candidates in the state achieved straight As, while more students obtained at least a credit in their examinations.

Mustapha further noted that 27 schools recorded a 100 per cent pass rate, including those in rural areas, demonstrating that access to quality education can drive excellence regardless of geographical limitations.

In light of these achievements, he encouraged SPM leavers to explore diverse education and career pathways beyond traditional academic routes.

He said opportunities in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), artificial intelligence (AI), and the semiconductor industry are among key sectors driving the nation’s economy.

He also urged school leavers to consider prospects in renewable energy, including solar, hydro and green technology, given the growing global focus on energy sustainability.

“Sabah and Sarawak have strong potential in these sectors, and the younger generation must be prepared to become a skilled workforce that will lead the nation’s energy transformation towards a more sustainable future,” he said.

Mustapha added that such fields not only offer high-skilled employment opportunities but also position youths from both states to become leaders in the digital economy, high-technology industries, and sustainable development on the global stage.

He also reminded all SPM 2025 candidates that their results, regardless of outcome, are only the beginning of their journey.

“Continue to move forward with confidence, enhance your skills, and seize every opportunity for a brighter future,” he said.
