WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump is facing backlash after quoting a paraphrased line attributed to Napoleon, suggesting he is above the law.

“He who saves his Country does not violate any Law,” Trump posted on X on Saturday.

Democrats slammed the remark, with Senator Adam Schiff calling it “Spoken like a true dictator.”

Vice President JD Vance made a similar statement earlier this month, arguing that “judges aren’t allowed to control the executive’s legitimate power.”

Since returning to office three weeks ago, Trump has drawn criticism for his governance style.

His self-appointment to cultural institutions like the Kennedy Center and his appointment of tech billionaire Elon Musk to a government post without congressional approval have sparked lawsuits.

States, including California and New Mexico, argue Musk was granted “unchecked legal authority.”

So far, courts have temporarily blocked at least 12 White House decisions.

Napoleon, who died in exile in 1821, remains a divisive figure in France, viewed by some as a reformer and others as an authoritarian ruler. – BERNAMA
