Sri Lanka cyclone death toll rises to 618 as hundreds remain missing

COLOMBO: The death toll from the disaster situation triggered by Cyclone Ditwah in Sri Lanka has risen to 618, while 209 people remain missing, Lankapuvath News Agency reported, citing the Disaster Management Centre (DMC).

Kandy district is the most affected, reporting 232 deaths and 81 missing persons. Nuwara Eliya and Badulla districts follow, with 89 and 83 deaths respectively, while a combined total of 63 people are reported missing from the two districts.

According to the DMC, more than two million people across the country have been affected by the adverse weather, with 4,071 houses fully destroyed. More than 100,000 individuals from 29,874 families are currently sheltered in safety centres. – BERNAMA-LANKAPUVATH
