KOTA SAMARAHAN: The newest attraction in the city, Sarawak Science Centre (SSCiEX), has recorded more than 60,000 visitors since it was officially opened on July 29.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg noted this good turnout by visitors, adding that they could gain a better understanding of scientific processes through the exhibitions displayed at the centre.
He gave as an example how run-of-river dams utilise the theory of gravity, where flowing water turns turbines to generate energy.
“The technology used for run-of-river dams is different from that of the Bakun Dam. Run-of-river dams only utilise flowing water without submerging land areas.
“Society will better understand the difference when they see the actual representation of a run-of-river dam displayed at the centre, allowing them to understand that the technology operates on a different concept from other conventional dams.
“Through the exhibitions at SSCiEX, at least they can better understand the method of generating energy through this scientific process,” he said.
He shared this in his speech during the Foundation Laying and Exchange of Agreements ceremony for Sarawak Bioindustrial Park in Kota Samarahan here today.
Abang Johari stressed that SSCiEX also showcased rocket and hydrogen technologies to enable children to learn about the scientific processes involved in rocket production and launching through demonstrations provided at the centre.
“At least our children will understand these scientific processes and, through such awareness, they can apply other scientific discoveries using the resources we possess as the foundation for technological advancement,” he added.
Abang Johari also affirmed that his continued support for such initiatives was driven by his commitment towards the state’s development.
“When society becomes accustomed to technology and truly understands it, they will understand the direction we are heading,” he said.
