KUCHING: The majestic St Peter’s Church located at Padungan here has been hailed as a symbol of faith, unity and Sarawak’s enduring religious harmony.

At today’s official opening ceremony of the newly built church, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg described the church as a striking and proud landmark in the heart of the beautiful city here.

“Congratulations on the successful completion of this iconic house of worship. This is not just a place for prayer and reflection, it is a symbol of vision, resilience and deep-rooted faith.

“Located in the very centre of Kuching, the presence of the church among other religious houses in close proximity is a powerful testament to the religious harmony and unity that Sarawak is so proud to uphold,” he said in his text of speech read by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas during the opening ceremony here.

Abang Johari further said Sarawak is blessed to live in a land where mutual respect and peaceful coexistence are not mere aspirations, but a way of life.

“This church adds further beauty to that legacy and will undoubtedly be a feature tourism attraction in the years to come.

“What is even more heartening is the spirit of togetherness that made this vision a reality,” he said.

He also praised the collaborative spirit that brought the project to fruition, highlighting the unity displayed by the Catholic community and their supporters from other faiths and backgrounds.

“Whether through generous funding or physical labour, this has truly been a shining example of what a united community can achieve.

“It is a shining model of how shared purpose and collective goodwill can give rise to greatness,” he said.

As the church embarks on a new chapter, Abang Johari also wished the parishioners and the Archdiocese of Kuching continued blessings in their spiritual journey.

Earlier, Catholic Archbishop of Kuching Datuk Dr Simon Poh said St Peter’s Church, strategically located near the iconic white cat statue, complements Kuching’s beautiful symphony of religious harmony, friendship and goodwill.

“The church now stands proudly among Kuching’s major religious landmarks, including the old State Mosque, Sikh Temple, Hindu Temple, Indian Muslims’ Surau, Floating Mosque, Anglican Church and three Chinese temples.

“It represents the Catholic community as an integral pillar in this harmony – a blessing to future generations,” he said.

Later, speaking to reporters, Poh said the church serves as a symbol of unity, aiming to foster harmony, contribute meaningfully to society, and help build a better Sarawak, while also standing as an example for other states in Malaysia and beyond.

“Kuching is a city of unity, and Sarawak is a land of unity. And this church stands for more than just a building – it represents a community.

“It is also the hope of Sarawak and a blessing for all of us in the journey of nation-building,” he said.
