KUCHING: The relocation of key utilities for the flood mitigation project at the Stampin Resettlement Scheme has reached a critical stage, with preliminary costs estimated at RM18 million.

Kota Sentosa assemblyman, Wilfred Yap Yau Sin, said of the total, about RM15 million is allocated for electricity infrastructure while RM3 million will cover telecommunications lines.

He said the site assessment and utility relocation process is crucial to ensure smooth implementation of the flood mitigation works once construction begins.

“This critical step is necessary to avoid delays or disruptions during the project rollout,” he said after a site visit to the scheme along Jalan Stampin Baru here today.

He added that Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB) and Telekom Malaysia (TM) have agreed to submit final cost estimates to the project consultant before the end of April 2026.

Yap stressed that close coordination among all relevant agencies and stakeholders would help expedite the tender process, which he hopes can be issued by the Department of Drainage and Irrigation (DID) Sarawak before the end of May.

The site visit was attended by representatives from DID Sarawak, the Sarawak Rivers Board (LSS), TM, Sacofa Sdn Bhd, Sarawak Water, SEB, and project consultant Jurutera ADDA Sdn Bhd.

The flood mitigation project is expected to significantly improve drainage capacity and reduce flood risks in the area, which has long been prone to flooding, thereby enhancing the safety and quality of life for residents.

Yap said he will continue to closely monitor the project’s progress together with the relevant authorities.
