THE Sarawak Government is taking proactive steps to ensure that regatta events held across the state adhere to standardised guidelines and safety protocols.
Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew said that the Divisional Tourism Task Group (DTTG) has been established to coordinate tourism-related projects, including regattas, at the divisional level.

“The Sarawak government strongly supports the organisation of regattas across the state. To facilitate this, the DTTG was established to coordinate tourism-related projects and programmes at the divisional level, including regatta events.
“DTTG also aims to promote community involvement through various complementary activities such as food fairs, handicraft and local product sales, homestay packages and local tour offerings,” he said.
He said this during the question-and-answer session at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting here today (May 21).
Ting added that safety remains a top priority in organising regattas.
He explained that organisers are required to prioritise safety by assessing the physical condition and suitability of the river.
“Organisers were also advised to form a safety team involving agencies like LSS, Marine Police Force, Malaysia Fire and Rescue Department (BOMBA) and Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) and ensure all the participants wear jackets and abide by the safety protocols,” he added.
