KUCHING: Sarawak is awaiting a federal decision on its proposed formula under Article 112D of the Federal Constitution for calculating the state’s special grant.

Article 112D provides for periodic reviews of the special grant payable by the Federal Government to Sarawak.

Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Law, MA63 and State-Federal Relations), Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali, said the state government hopes the matter can be resolved as soon as possible.

“So far, there has been no agreement or decision on the special formula that we have proposed.

“We hope that the special formula submitted under Article 112D as the basis for calculating the special grant can be resolved as soon as possible,” she said.

She said this when met by reporters after the Opening Ceremony and Forum of International Archives Week 2026 at Pustaka Negeri Sarawak yesterday (June22).

Hasidah said the Sarawak government is still awaiting a decision from the federal government and hopes the outcome of the negotiations will benefit not only Sarawak but also the country as a whole.

“It is up to the federal government, and we hope that a positive decision can be reached in the near future,” she added.

Previously, Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the Sarawak government had proposed a new formula to the federal government regarding the special grant under Article 112D of the Federal Constitution to ensure a fairer and more flexible financial distribution.

He said the proposal involves the return of 20 per cent of the revenue or taxes collected from the state.

According to him, a percentage-based formula is more practical as the grant is reviewed every few years to reflect current economic conditions.

“My proposal is that 20 per cent of the revenue collected in Sarawak be returned to the state. If the revenue is high, the return will be high, and if it is low, the return will be lower.

“This is more flexible than a fixed amount such as RM600 million annually, which may not be sufficient in the future,” he said.
