KUCHING: The overall crime index in Kuching recorded a 6.9 per cent decline in 2025, with 917 cases reported compared to 985 cases in 2024, reflecting improved public safety driven largely by a reduction in property-related crimes.
Kuching Police Chief, ACP Alexson Naga Chabu, said the drop involved 68 fewer cases, mainly due to decreases in theft and motorcycle theft offences.
“Property crime fell by 9.92 per cent, from 887 cases in 2024 to 799 cases in 2025, while motorcycle theft recorded a significant reduction of 20.25 per cent, dropping from 242 cases to 193 cases,” he said during the recent Kuching IPD monthly assembly.
He added that the improvement placed the daily crime threshold ratio for IPD Kuching at 2.19, indicating better overall crime control in the district.
However, Alexson noted that violent crime showed an increase, rising from 98 cases in 2024 to 118 cases in 2025, an increase of 20 cases or 20.41 per cent, which remains an area of concern for police.
On crime prevention efforts, he said the Crime Prevention and Community Safety Division achieved all its Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for 2025.
“Under preventive operations, Mobile Patrol Vehicle (MPV) units inspected 45,765 vehicles and 48,242 individuals, resulting in 5,904 summonses and 23 arrests, while Motorcycle Patrol Units (URB) inspected 15,340 vehicles and 15,344 individuals, issuing 556 summonses and making 26 arrests.
“These active patrols enhance police omnipresence and help reduce opportunities for crime, especially during late-night hours,” he said.
Community policing efforts also showed strong engagement, with 1,476 visits conducted by School Liaison Officers and 1,006 visits by Mosque Liaison Officers throughout the year.
Alexson urged the public to continue cooperating with police by installing closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems, actively participating in the ‘Skim Rondaan Sukarela’ (SRS) initiative, and using the Volunteer Smartphone Patrol (VSP) application to share information related to crime.
In narcotics enforcement, he said police recorded 2,480 arrests in 2025, involving 128 drug traffickers, 308 individuals in possession of drugs and 2,044 drug addicts, an increase of 13 per cent compared with 2024.
“Drugs with an estimated market value of RM25 million were seized during the period, a sharp increase from RM5 million in the previous year.
“Commercial crime also rose, with 3,335 police reports received and 671 investigation papers opened, representing an increase of 138 cases or 20.56 per cent, while estimated losses grew by RM3.06 million,” he said.
Additionally, Alexson informed that traffic enforcement saw 50,976 summonses issued in 2025, up 1.6 per cent from the previous year, along with 26 arrests for dangerous driving and 10 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Vehicle seizures also rose from 125 to 300 vehicles.
During the monthly assembly, Alexson also congratulated five officers on their promotions and 37 personnel who received certificates of appreciation, while reminding all Kuching IPD personnel to uphold integrity, discipline and professionalism in carrying out their duties.
