MIRI: Sarawak continues to champion harmony and mutual respect among its diverse communities, rejecting all forms of religious extremism and divisive politics.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin Lee highlighted that Sarawak’s long-standing culture of inclusivity and tolerance remains one of the state’s greatest strengths.

“Festive celebrations such as Christmas carry messages of love, peace and hope, and they also reflect the maturity of Sarawakian society, where people of different faiths and cultures live together in mutual respect,” he said at the 2025 Christmas and 2026 New Year celebration at Kampung Muhibbah Community Hall in Kuala Baram, here yesterday (Jan 3).

The Senadin assemblyman added that in Sarawak, it is common for residents to exchange festive greetings, visit one another’s homes, and share in celebrations without suspicion or division.

“This is our identity and our strength, and it is something we must continue to preserve and protect,” he said.

Lee emphasised that harmony in Sarawak is not merely a slogan but is reflected in daily life, including the presence of houses of worship of different religions located side by side and the close cooperation among communities in organising social and community programmes.

He also expressed appreciation for the role of the Sarawak Government’s Unit for Other Religions (UNIFOR), which strengthens interfaith relations through support for houses of worship, welfare initiatives and community development programmes.

“UNIFOR reflects the state government’s commitment to ensuring that religion is respected and celebrated, not politicised, and that it serves as a bridge to unite society,” Lee said.

He further praised the spirit of cooperation and social concern shown by the Kampung Muhibbah community, describing it as an important foundation in building a peaceful, resilient and supportive society.

Lee also urged all parties to continue promoting unity, rejecting extremism, and extending care to those in need to ensure that Sarawak remains peaceful, harmonious and prosperous as it enters the new year.
