KUCHING: The Sarawak government remains committed to enhancing infrastructure in the Simanggang area, aiming to uplift the community’s well-being and improve their quality of life.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the government is willing to take bold steps in infrastructure development to instil the value of economic growth and how it can help break the cycle of poverty.
He explained that under the current development plan, which runs through to 2030, a new bridge in the area is expected to be completed this year. Meanwhile, major road projects are also underway, including the Second Trunk Road, which connects Sebuyau, Lingga, Sri Aman, and a dual carriageway from Samarahan to Sebuyau.
From Sebuyau, he said, a new road set to be completed within three years will link through Lingga and Maludam to Sri Aman, reducing travel time between Kuching and Sri Aman to approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.
“With these new roads, we’re opening up land — and it’s up to our people to seize the opportunity to move forward.
“If you have land, take care of it and develop it. Even if it’s not a large area, with modern technology, it can become a productive agricultural venture and a source of income, especially with supporting infrastructure like roads,” said Abang Johari during the Majlis Ramah Tamah Aidilfitri Anak Perantau Simanggang held today (April 12) at Dewan HIKMAH.
Speaking on paddy cultivation in the area, Abang Johari said that he had directed State Financial Secretary Datuk Seri Dr Wan Lizozman Wan Omar to allocate around RM1 billion to upgrade irrigation and drainage systems to support rice farming in the area.
He also revealed that one of the upcoming projects is the construction of the longest waterfront in Simanggang, which is expected to take about three years. Dedicated commercial areas will also be developed along the waterfront to stimulate the local economy.
Abang Johari added that as all the coastal areas become increasingly interconnected, the entire region will experience growth — paving the way for a brighter and more prosperous future.
