KUCHING: One temporary evacuation centre (PPS) remains open in Sarawak as floods persist following the current 2025/2026 Northeast Monsoon that affected the region.
In a statement issued by Sarawak Security and Enforcement Unit (UPKS), acting as Secretary of the Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee (JPBNS), it said that as of 8:00 am yesterday (Jan 6), the SMK Bekenu Multipurpose Hall in the Miri Division (Subis) is still sheltering flood victims.
“Opened on January 4 at 2:30 pm, the PPS currently accommodates 112 Household Heads (KIR), totaling 307 individuals from Kampung Kawang Bekenu and Kampung Jengalas Bekenu,” it said.
In a related development, JPBNS also reported that the river water level monitoring showed several areas in Sarawak were still at Danger Level, Warning Level, and Alert Level.
“Danger Level readings were recorded in parts of the Sibu and Miri Divisions.
“Meanwhile, Warning Levels have been recorded in the Mukah, Bintulu, Miri, and Limbang Divisions, while several other areas in the Betong, Sibu, Miri, and Limbang Divisions are at Alert Level and require close monitoring,” it said.
Accordingly, JPBNS advised the public, especially residents in low-lying areas and near rivers, to remain vigilant, comply with authorities’ instructions, and be prepared to move to PPS if directed.
JPBNS also stressed that cooperation from all parties is crucial to ensure the safety of lives and properties.
“The authorities will continue to monitor the situation and provide the latest updates to the public through official channels from time to time,” it said.
