KUCHING: Sarawak is well-positioned to be a key player in the regional halal economy.
In stating this potential, SME adviser to the Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment, Datuk Seri Mohd Naroden Majais said its strong infrastructure, including ports, the Pan Borneo and Coastal highways, and industrial facilities support efficient halal production and distribution.
“The global halal market is valued at approximately USD 5 trillion, with the Asia-Pacific region contributing USD 2.8 trillion, presenting significant opportunities for growth,” he said.
Naroden said the four-day Borneo International Halal Industry Showcase 2026 (BIHAS) will therefore reinforce Malaysia’s position as one of the world’s leading halal markets and aims to position Sarawak as a key player in the regional halal economy amid growing demand across the Asia-Pacific region.
The event which is being held from July 20-23 will serve as a platform for halal entrepreneurs across Borneo to showcase their products, foster collaboration and expand business opportunities.
It will feature the region’s rich culinary heritage through food exhibitions, celebrity chef demonstrations, and cultural entertainment.
Naroden said the Borneo Kitchen will showcase entrepreneurs preparing signature dishes for the public to sample the diverse flavours of Sarawak and Borneo.
“The showcase is named Borneo Kitchen because it brings together participants from across Borneo, involving Sarawak, Sabah, Brunei Darussalam and Kalimantan,” he said during press conference on the BIHAS 2026 here, on Monday (July 20).
Naroden also highlighted the state government’s free tertiary education initiative at Sarawak-owned universities, which helps develop a skilled and knowledgeable workforce, further strengthening Sarawak’s position to capture a greater share of the Southeast Asian halal market.
In addition, he pointed to the state’s abundant land resources, supportive government policies and a structured halal certification ecosystem.
“While halal certification is issued by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM), the Islamic Council of Sarawak (MIS) and the ministry work closely together to encourage industry growth and assist local entrepreneurs in obtaining halal certification,” he said.
He added that a gala dinner will be held to honour outstanding halal entrepreneurs from Sarawak, and participating countries.
