KUCHING: IAMA (International Arithmetic Mathematics Association will be organising the Sarawak State Level LCT cup Mental Arithmetic Competition and IQ New Maths Competition on this 12th August at CityONE Megamall Exhibition Centre, 1st Floor Mall 2. This will be the second year this competition is held, said a press statement yesterday.
This is a unique competition where all students who participate in the competition are a winner and will walk away with a trophy. The reason behind practising this is to boost the confidence of students and to encourage them to show their ability.
“We had recently organised International and National LCT cup Mental Arithmetic Competition and IQ New Maths Competition which was held on 28th May 2017 at the prestigious hotel; The Shore Hotel and Residence in Melaka. Over 1,600 participants from more than 60 learning centers throughout Malaysia had participated in the competition. After going through many rigid selection processes, only a few learning centres were selected to participate in the finale. There were 12 categories in total, nine for LCT cup Mental Arithmetic and three for IQ New Maths, said a spokesperson through the press release.
“This year, for the first time in 18 years in Malaysia, our Sarawak team won the National Champion for Best Centre. Tadika Krista Stapok made Sarawak proud by winning the top four places in the National Level of the IQ New Maths Competition and won the National Champion for Best Centre Award 2017 and National Best Teacher Award for IQ New Maths National Competition 2017.
“Meanwhile, Tadika Krista Pelita Height won the Premium award in LCT Cup Mental Arithmetic International and National Competition 2017,” the spokesperson pointed out.
IQ New Maths is using higher order thinking skills based learning which includes critical, logical, reflective, metacognitive and creative thinking. Higher Order Thinking Skills distinguishes critical thinking over Low Order Learning Outcomes which attained by memorizing. It encourages a child to be more creative in their thinking.
Since the changing of KSSR syllabus, Higher Order Thinking Skill teaching is paramount importance. Children are cultivated and nurture to understand concept rather than to memorized concept and formulas. Children are cultivated to think things logically and out of the box questions. They learn to persevere and problem solving. Teachers must be all well-trained and certified before they are qualified to teach.
