KUCHING: Sarawak is advancing in high-tech innovation through projects that develop local expertise while engaging global partners.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the KETEQ AI chip project is a prime example, noting that it carries a Sarawak brand and is designed for AI and automotive applications.

“Although manufactured in the UK to take advantage of a laboratory collaborating with General Electric and Siemens, the project enables Sarawak’s scientists and engineers to work alongside international experts and bring advanced knowledge back to the state,” he said at the 31st anniversary celebration of the Sarawak Foundry and Engineering Industries Association last night (Oct 4).

The analogue chip, made from gallium nitride, a material stronger than traditional silicon, can handle high-voltage applications and store large amounts of data, making it suitable for autonomous vehicles and AI systems.

Abang Johari noted that this development positions Sarawak at the forefront of innovation, with the gallium nitride chip being a world first.

“This project shows that Sarawak is not just adopting technology; we are learning, adapting, and creating our own capabilities,” he said.

By participating in the development process and branding the product under Sarawak, the state is nurturing a homegrown technological ecosystem.

“This is part of Sarawak’s broader vision to embrace advanced technology while developing local talent,” Abang Johari added.
