KUCHING: Sarawak’s next state election is likely to be held in the second half of next year after the Gawai celebrations, rather than in early 2027, opined political observer Datuk Peter Minos.

Based on his observations, Minos said July or August next year would be a desirable window as it comes on the back of the festive Gawai mood and typically more conducive weather conditions.

“Elections are best held when things are good — when voters are happy, confident about the present and optimistic about the future. Public perception plays a critical role in electoral outcomes,” he said in a statement on Friday.

Minos noted that the current positive sentiment among Sarawakians has been shaped by a series of ongoing and completed development initiatives under the state leadership, including the coastal highway and bridges, the takeover of Bintulu Port, the establishment of AirBorneo, the rollout of the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system, free tertiary education and growth in green industries.

He also pointed to major upcoming projects such as the proposed new airport and a high-capacity deep-sea port at Tanjung Embang, which he said are expected to create jobs, boost incomes and open up new business opportunities.

“These projects have generated a sense of excitement and confidence. They make Sarawak admired and respected.

“Moreover, the state government and its leadership are widely perceived as active, decisive and efficient, a factor that resonates with voters across age groups and between rural and urban communities,” he said.

Minos further said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s firm stance in defending Sarawak’s rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) has strengthened public confidence, citing the successful assertion of state rights in matters involving oil and gas, including the sales tax on petroleum products.

“In terms of development projects and standing up for Sarawak’s rights, the Premier has done it right — very right and correct,” he said.

Given the prevailing positive mood, Minos questioned the need to delay the state election until 2027 unless there is a compelling reason to do so, saying the current environment could be ideal for seeking a fresh mandate.
