KUCHING: Strong state support and a collaborative approach are being positioned as the foundation for AirBorneo’s long-term development, with an emphasis on careful planning, community engagement, and partnerships with other airlines.
State Secretary Datuk Amar Abu Bakar Marzuki said this reflects the state government’s commitment to building a sustainable aviation ecosystem that serves both public needs and future growth.
Abu Bakar, who is also AirBorneo Chairman, praised Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for his “far-sighted vision” in improving the state’s transportation network and described AirBorneo’s acquisition of MASwings as the beginning of a broader journey.
“Every journey must start with one step. Moving forward, we will continue to find the best ways to serve the people of Sarawak,” he said at a press conference at the Kuching International Airport VIP Terminal on Friday.

He emphasised that the airline’s success depends on collaboration with other carriers, government agencies, and the community.
“We cannot just do things alone. We have to work together with other airlines to provide good service to the people of Sarawak,” he said.
Abu Bakar also called for public patience and support as AirBorneo grows.
“We cannot expect perfection at the first or second step, but moving forward, we promise the best for our airline industry,” he said, underscoring the government’s commitment to quality service while building a sustainable aviation ecosystem.
Echoing Transport Minister, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, he stressed that expert studies and professional teams will guide decisions on aircraft, operations, and financial management.
“From time to time, we will move forward using a collaborative model, ensuring that every step is carefully planned and executed,” Abu Bakar added.
