KUCHING: Sarawak is gearing up to host the Borneo Blockchain Conference 2025 on Oct 9 to 10, a landmark event aimed at accelerating blockchain adoption and fostering innovation within the state’s growing digital economy.
Chief executive officer of the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) Datuk Dr Anderson Tiong highlighted the importance of blockchain in Sarawak’s transformation journey.
“Blockchain has emerged as a transformative technology and has reshaped many industries, including logistics, supply chain, finance, healthcare and governance,” he said.
Dr Anderson said this during a press conference unveiling the Borneo Blockchain Conference at Business Events (BE) Sarawak Office yesterday.
“The Borneo Blockchain Conference will bring together experts, innovators, and policymakers to share knowledge and explore blockchain’s potential, particularly in support of Sarawak’s Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030,” he said adding that blockchain’s applications extend far beyond cryptocurrencies and NFTs.
He pointed out real-world tried and tested cases such as digital identity, certification, asset tokenisation, halal verification, healthcare data protection, and supply chain tracking, which could benefit both the government and private sectors.
“As the regulator for communication and multimedia, SMA is working closely with other agencies and industry partners to foster a secure, transparent, and trusted digital ecosystem in Sarawak,” he said.
Dr Anderson also encouraged innovators to submit entries for the Digital Economy Awards (DEA) 2025, with winners to be announced during the International Digital Economy Conference Sarawak (IDECS) 2025, taking place on 22–23 October 2025.
The grand prize includes an all-expenses-paid trip to the Mobile World Congress 2026 in Barcelona, Spain.
“The Borneo Blockchain Conference 2025, which will be officiated by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Professor Dr. Sim Kui Hian, is expected to bring together policymakers, academics, regulators, and industry players to explore practical blockchain applications that support Sarawak’s digital economy initiatives,” he reiterated.
