MIRI: The Sarawak government has always been committed to improving the standard of education in the state.
Tourism, Arts and Culture Assistant Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin also assured that the state will continue to prioritise the well-being of students.
“This commitment remains despite the change of federal administration and education is under the federal purview,” said Lee after officiating at SMK Baru Miri’s student pick-up zone yesterday morning.
He added that efforts to provide modern facilities to create a conducive learning environment will continue to be carried out.
“We have 400 dilapidated schools that urgently need repair, and we hope to do this as soon as the federal government is ready to accept our offer of a RM1 million advance to it.
“We are aware that our schools are far behind those in the peninsula in terms of facilities. This is something we want to urgently address because only then we can expect to see better academic grades,” Lee said.
The 120m-long pick-up zone or ‘Pondok Sri Menanti’ complete with shelter, is fully funded by the state government under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) project.
Also present at the launch was the school principal Jerrah Pandins.
