KUCHING: The Young Malaysian Movement (YMM) Sarawak has made history with the premiere of its first-ever short film, Sarawak Speed, an inspiring story of sportsmanship, perseverance, and unity.

The film, entirely created by YMM members from scriptwriting and directing to acting and production, represents a significant milestone for both YMM Sarawak and YMM on a national scale.

The film, scripted by Christopher Chiong and Kally Teo, portrays young athletes overcoming challenges and pushing through adversity, emphasising the values of discipline, perseverance, and collaboration.

Sarawak Speed premiered on Feb 23 (Sunday) at the MBKS Auditorium.

Additional screenings will be held at the MBKS Auditorium, to allow more people to experience this inspiring story on the big screen.

Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Minister, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, commended YMM Sarawak for its dedication to youth empowerment and creative storytelling.

“This film reflects our youth’s real-life struggles and aspirations.

“It tells a compelling story of resilience, one that mirrors the challenges young Sarawakians face every day, whether in sports, education, or personal growth.

“Sarawak Speed proves that our young talents are not just participants in the creative industry but pioneers who can tell stories that inspire, unite, and uplift communities,” he said in his speech.

YMM Sarawak Chairman, Tan Chun Ha, highlighted the project’s significance.

“Sarawak Speed is not just a film; it is a movement that showcases the power of youth, the essence of teamwork, and the strength of our diversity.

“With the right platforms, strategic support, and encouragement, we can transform Sarawak into a hub for creative excellence,” he said.

Chiong said YMM Sarawak has made history as the first NGO in Malaysia to produce a film entirely by its members, hoping to showcase Sarawak to a broader audience.

“Today, YMM Sarawak has made history, and we hope that more people from other states and even abroad will have the opportunity to see and appreciate Sarawak,” he said.

Additionally, he said that the message behind Sarawak Speed is about young people chasing their dreams and the perseverance they face while facing challenges.

“This film is not just about athletes competing; it’s about young people chasing their dreams, overcoming challenges, and refusing to give up.

“The real fight happens off the field and in those moments when you choose to keep going despite the challenges,” he said.

Abdul Karim also acknowledged YMM Sarawak’s recent achievements, including winning the Perdana Belia Negara 2024 Awards in the Organisation Category.

“YMM Sarawak’s work goes beyond just events; they build a movement that nurtures young leaders and changemakers in Sarawak.

“Their commitment to holistic youth development through leadership, sports, and creative initiatives is commendable,” he said.
