KUCHING: Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) has inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with six world technology companies to establish Sarawak Centre of Excellence for Digital Economy (SCEDE).

The centre is to be based at the Centre of Technical Excellence Sarawak (Centexs), Kuching campus.

The six companies are General Electric International Inc, IBM Malaysia Sdn Bhd, Keysight Technologies (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, Huawei Technologies Malaysia Sdn Bhd, Honeywell Engineering Sdn Bhd, and Fusionex Innovations Sdn Bhd.

Earlier, Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari witnessed the exchange of MoUs, including the MoU between SMA and University of Malaya, Malaysia’s top leading university for cooperation in research into and development of the digital economy.

According to a media release, SMA general manager Dr Zaidi Razak said the establishment of the centre would accelerate Sarawak’s research and innovation agenda in the digital economy to a world standing.

“Having access to the tools of these world technology companies and platforms will enable Sarawak to achieve its mission. The centre will provide researchers and start-ups access to industry standard digital and data science platforms and tools for research, development, innovation and commercialisation.

“This will also serve as a platform for the partners to showcase their capabilities and technologies, promoting their partnership with the state government as well as investment opportunities for outcomes from research and start-ups.”
