KUCHING: As the festive season approaches, the public is urged to take extra precautions, especially in light of recent fire incidents during Ramadan, said Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng.

Expressing concern over three fire incidents during the fasting month, Wee hopes such tragedies do not occur during the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.

“For those traveling back to their hometowns, please drive carefully. There is no need to rush, you will get there safely as long as you take the necessary precautions,” he said.

Wee made these remarks while representing Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian at the MBKS Ihsan Ramadan programme at the MBKS Community Hall on Tuesday (Mar 25).

Encouraging cultural appreciation, he urged the public to visit friends and experience different traditions during the Raya festivities.

“Sarawak is rich in culture and tradition. After Hari Raya, we will celebrate Gawai. This is what makes our state unique,” he said, adding that a stable government is crucial for fostering harmony and ensuring the continued enjoyment of all festive seasons.

At the event, 200 asnaf children from 15 villages within the MBKS jurisdiction received Ramadan aid of RM150 each.

Also, 20 mosques and suraus were provided with financial assistance of RM700 each, along with prayer mats, telekung, and copies of the Tafsir Al-Quran.

Wee highlighted that the initiative, which brings together public and private sector support, reflects the spirit of unity and compassion.

“This programme demonstrates our commitment to a caring and inclusive society. We are grateful to all our partners for their unwavering support in making it a success,” he added.

The MBKS Ihsan Ramadan programme reflects the council’s dedication to community welfare and inter-agency collaboration, reinforcing the values of compassion, generosity, and unity.
