SEMATAN: Staying happy may sound simple, but for 71-year-old Liu Thian Chiang, it is the secret to staying active – and the reason he recently completed his first Borneo Triathlon 100 sprint race.
The Kuching resident was inspired by his 38-year-old daughter to take part and spent nearly a year preparing for the event.
“This is my first time. My daughter told me about this Ironman and Ironwoman event, so I wanted to try and be part of the crowd,” he said after completing the race.
Liu, who was accompanied by family members including his grandson, admitted running was not his strongest discipline but remained committed to maintaining his fitness.
“For training, I’ve been doing it for almost one year. Running is not my strongest area, but I train and swim for health,” he told Sarawak Tribune at Sematan Palm Beach Resort today (June 21).
Liu was all smiles after crossing the finish line despite challenging weather conditions during the race.
“I want to try it again next year,” he said.
When asked about the secret behind maintaining his stamina at 71, Liu said there was no special formula or strict diet involved.
“You must concentrate on your exercise. There’s no special diet. I eat anything,” he said.
However, he believes maintaining a positive outlook on life is just as important.
“Must be happy. That’s the important thing,” he added.
For Liu, the race was less about competition and more about embracing an active lifestyle alongside family while continuing to challenge himself in new ways.
