KUCHING: The ‘Eat More Local Fruits Campaign’ promotes awareness of nutritious local fruits and encourages community consumption through Sarawak’s leadership network.

Now in its third edition since its introduction in 2024, the programme was featured during the last day of the 19th Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting yesterday (May 20).

A special rice tasting programme was also introduced to showcase efforts in strengthening Sarawak’s padi and rice industry.

The initiative supports ongoing work related to the proposed the Sarawak Padi and Rice Board Bill 2026, which aims to further develop the sector.

DUN staff, university students and members of the media participated in a fruit eating fiesta held at the State Legislative Assembly Complex.

Visitors were served a variety of local fruits, including durian, pineapple, dabai, cempedak and watermelon.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg officiated at the event at 6.20pm after delivering his ministerial winding-up speech.

He later joined fellow assembly members, officers and staff in sampling the local fruits before leaving the venue at around 6.50pm.

The campaign was organised by the Department of Agriculture Sarawak in collaboration with several agencies, including the Ministry of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Sarawak (M-FICORD), Sarawak Veterinary Services Department, Sarawak Land Consolidation and Rehabilitation Authority, and the Sarawak Land Development Board.

Other participating agencies were the Sarawak Rubber Industry Board, Sarawak Department of Irrigation and Drainage, Sago and Nipah Development Board, Sarawak State Farmers’ Organisation, Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board, Malaysian Cocoa Board and the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA).
