BETONG: Youth must act as agents of change in the face of increasingly complex global challenges.

Betong Member of Parliament, Datuk Dr Richard Rapu, said if given the right opportunities, young people have the capacity to bring about major transformation.

“Youth are the reflection of the future and an important asset capable of contributing to various development sectors.

“With their energy, spirit, creativity, and courage, they must step forward as agents of change and as knowledgeable, ethical, and progressive leaders, in line with the increasingly challenging demands of the world,” he said.

He made these remarks at the Community Development Department (KEMAS) Synergy Programme: Santunan Desa and KEMAS (Youth Exploration Activities), which was held at SMK St Augustine today.

He stressed that the government remains committed to empowering young people’s potential through various initiatives.

“This is because we hope that youth will not only succeed in their careers and personal lives but also create a positive impact on society and the nation,” he added.

Dr Richard said the programme highlighted KEMAS Youth Exploration, a platform emphasising holistic self-development for young people.

“Through this component, youth are exposed to various activities that nurture leadership and teamwork, allowing them to lead, work collaboratively, and appreciate diverse perspectives.

“It also strengthens self-identity and confidence by allowing youth to recognise their potential, build decision-making confidence, and face challenges with courage.

“Additionally, it instils patriotism and love for the nation, by fostering a sense of devotion to the homeland and awareness of the significant role of youth in national development,” he said.

Overall, the programme, organised by Betong Division KEMAS, gathered 100 students of SMK St Augustine, trainees from the Sarawak Centre of Technical Excellence (CENTEXS) Betong, and members of the Betong Beliawanis Club.

The event featured health screenings, aerobics, leadership talks, stress management sessions, traditional and modern games, and a patriotic race based on history and national pride.
