SAMARAHAN: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening emotional and psychological well-being within the university community through the Striving Towards Emotional and Psychological Support (STEPS) 2025 Convention, held at DeTAR Putra Unimas on Oct 13 and 14.

The biennial convention, organised by the Psychology and Counselling Section (PsyCon) under the Student Services Centre, Division of Student Affairs and Alumni, marked its third edition this year in conjunction with the National Counselling Month celebration.

The 2025 convention, themed “Living in Balance: Managing Life, Work, and Emotional Well-Being in a Fast-Changing World,” highlights the importance of maintaining mental equilibrium and resilience amid modern-day pressures, and was officiated by Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, on Tuesday (Oct 14).

Unimas vice-chancellor Professor Dr Ahmad Hata Rasit described the STEPS Convention as more than a routine programme, calling it “a collective movement to build a campus community that is empathetic, balanced, and healthy in body, mind, and spirit.”

“Mental health is not a sign of weakness but a mark of strength and self-awareness.

“In a fast-changing world, life’s pressures, from economic challenges to the influence of social media, have grown more complex.

“It is therefore vital to educate our society to be more open, empathetic, and proactive in addressing these challenges.”

Prof Ahmad Hata emphasised that emotional support and psychological well-being are shared responsibilities, not individual burdens, and initiatives such as STEPS reflect Unimas’ long-term goal of nurturing compassionate, well-rounded graduates.

“As a Community-Driven University, Unimas aims not only to produce knowledgeable graduates but also individuals who are balanced, ethical, and guided by compassion.”

He also lauded the convention’s success in bringing together experts, counsellors, academics, students, and external agencies to share strategies for promoting mental wellness.

Among the highlights were three concurrent workshops focusing on healing, coping, and parenting, alongside an interactive STEPS Forum, STEPS Highlight @ Influencer with Emir Haqim, and STEPS Financial Well-Being session.

Participants also took part in creative and physical wellness activities, including the STEPS Innovation Poster Competition, a mental health exhibition, and the 10K STEPS Zumba 2025, embodying the event’s holistic approach to health.

Prof Ahmad Hata extended his appreciation to all partners and participants for their commitment to promoting mental resilience and community well-being.

“Well-being of the mind is the foundation of a peaceful and prosperous society.

“Let us continue to build a caring, progressive, and sustainable university community together.”
