KUCHING: The Sarawak Tourism Federation (STF) has been commended for their efforts and initiatives to promote and market Sarawak tourism products.

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng lauded the federation for working very hard as the tourism sector has been affected during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“During then (the pandemic), our tourism agents and providers were unable to operate due to the international and local borders being closed for some time. This did affect a lot of people especially in the tourism industry.

“However, the tremendous efforts and continuous engagement by the federation with many parties have helped our Sarawak tourism sector to slowly boom again like the old days. I always believe tourism must be driven by the private sector,” he said yesterday.

On the celebration of Chap Goh Mei, Wee said the rabbit signifies longevity, peace, and prosperity.

While these values are not new, he said they are values that represent all the multiracial communities in Sarawak and there were clearly demonstrated by the state’s forefathers.

“I am sure that we have inherited these values and want to use them to help us overcome the challenges as well as uncertainties of our time.

“So, let us gallop into the year with confidence and camaraderie, harmony arising from the ability to appreciate different cultures for their unique beauty,” he said.

He added that it is crucial to continue the efforts of unity in diversity as well as harmony in diversity.
