KUCHING: The Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) and Yayasan Sabah have formalised a strategic partnership to advance sustainable bamboo cultivation, resource management and community training in Sabah, marking a key step towards building a bamboo-based green economy for the region.
The collaboration was sealed through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by deputy general manager of STIDC, Haluyah Awi, who represented the general manager and Yayasan Sabah corporate secretary Hanafiah Diman.
In a statement, STIDC said the partnership aims to promote sustainable bamboo cultivation and effective resource management while equipping local communities with skills and knowledge through targeted training programmes.
Both organisations are committed to supporting the development of Sabah’s bamboo industry with a focus on long-term environmental and economic benefits.
Under the MoU, STIDC will supply and sell high-quality bamboo seedlings for planting within the Yayasan Sabah Concession at Sungai Pinangah Forest Reserve, FMU 15, Keningau. STIDC will also provide expert advice, technical support, and training to participants under the “Program Penanaman Bahan Mentah – Buluh & Rotan”.
Meanwhile, Yayasan Sabah will allocate at least 40 hectares of land for bamboo planting, promote community participation, share best practices, monitor project progress and facilitate training in bamboo-based product development.
Yayasan Sabah will also bear all costs related to services and materials provided by STIDC.
Haluyah described the agreement as a catalyst for wider collaboration and growth.
“This two-year MoU will serve as a platform for cooperation and growth, bringing significant benefits not only to both organisations but also to the local bamboo industry and communities involved.
“The partnership is expected to create new opportunities for sustainable resource development and contribute to the shared vision of a greener, more resilient future,” she said.
