KUCHING: The suspect behind a series of stone-throwing incidents along Jalan Batu Kawa has been arrested and is currently in police custody under mental health observation.

Padungan assemblyman Chong Chieng Jen, who visited the Padawan District Police with his assistant Sim Kiat Leng today (July 8), confirmed the arrest, which was made late last night.

“We were informed by the OCPD of Padawan that the suspect was caught last night. He was found arranging stones on the road divider, and his appearance matched the individual seen in previous dashcam footage,” Chong said.

The arrest follows a month-long police operation after multiple reports of car windscreens being smashed by stones while driving along Jalan Batu Kawa. Patrols have been deployed along the stretch since last month in response to growing public concern.

Chong also commended the police for their proactive response.

“I thank the police for their untiring effort in helping to keep our streets safe for the citizens. We hope members of the public will continue to cooperate with the police and provide information of crime and wrongdoing to assist in crime solving and prevention.”

Chong said the police are not ruling out the possibility of other individuals being involved and have pledged to continue monitoring the area.

An application will also be made to the court to extend the suspect’s remand.
