KUCHING: The Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) has called on the Democratic Action Party (DAP) to cease misleading the public and retract their false accusations against Gabungan Party Sarawak (GPS).

SUPP Kuching Branch Youth Publicity Secretary, Hilary Lim, reiterated Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Law, MA63, and State-Federal Relations) Datuk Seri Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali’s statement, pointing out that Sarawak has been extracting oil and gas from land and the continental shelf since 2020, generating significant economic benefits for the state.

“This clearly reflects GPS and SUPP’s stance on Sarawak’s rights to oil and gas,” Lim said in a statement today (Mar 12).

Previously, Hasidah responded to Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong’s comments regarding the Petroleum Development Act (PDA) 1974, calling her claims ridiculous, particularly in light of Sarawak’s position on its oil and gas rights.

Yong had alleged that many Sarawakians were disappointed with the GPS government’s full recognition of the PDA 1974, claiming it contradicted the GPS’s earlier questions about the Act’s validity in recent years.

In response, Lim explained that the ongoing negotiations between Sarawak and Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) regarding gas are still in progress, with the final decision resting with the Prime Minister and Premier.

“The resolution of the ‘grey area’ concerning the coexistence of the Petroleum Development Act 1974, the Sarawak Oil Mining Ordinance 1958, and the Sarawak Gas Distribution Ordinance 2016 will be addressed through negotiations between GPS and the federal government in a way that ensures a win-win outcome, rooted in national unity.”

Lim also urged DAP to avoid using “election rhetoric” to mislead the people of Sarawak and instead focus on constructive discussions that will benefit the state’s residents.
