KUCHING: Registration for Form Six classes begins on Monday (June 8) and it appears that the STPM pathway is still a preferred choice for many with clear goals for their future.

Sarawak Tribune spoke to students who will be registering for Form Six to learn what influenced their decision to pursue the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) pathway, as well as their expectations and aspirations after completing their studies.

Dena Angleica Kesing

Dena Angleica Kesing said she will be attending SMK Kidurong in Bintulu for her Form Six education.

“I decided to choose Form Six after my mother mentioned it to me, and I began researching it further online, through friends, and with guidance from teachers to better understand the programme.

“I even went through some of their textbooks to get a general idea of the subjects, which led me to take it more seriously,” she said.

She expects that the journey will allow her to gain both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience which will help her prepare for the future.

“After I complete the programme, I am interested to pursue a science-related field, such as becoming an anesthesiologist,” she said.

However, she is keeping her options open, as she believes the certificate will offer a wider range of career pathways and facilitate her pursuit of a university degree.

Nur Ain Syahzani

Nur Ain Syahzani Afroza Sharuddin also shared her expectations.

“The reason why I chose to enroll in Form 6 at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Agama Matang 2 is because the certificate opens a pathway to pursue studies overseas.

“On my part I plan to get into Institut Pendidikan Guru (IPG) after completing STPM,” she said, revealing her ambitions to become a teacher.

Aina Syazwina

Aina Syazwina Mohamad Iyman, who studies at the same school, also spoke about her future aspirations.

“I believe Form 6 gives me the opportunity to gain deeper knowledge of a subject in a more mature learning environment,” she said.

She added that her decision to pursue the programme was influenced by the fact that the STPM certificate is recognised by both public and private universities, as well as many universities around the world.

“The course I am interested in after completing my STPM will be Syariah, to further my understanding on Islamic law and legal principles in order to pursue my career as a Syariah lawyer,” she said.

She hopes that the programme will allow her to improve her communication and academic skills.

Andrea Bertha

Andrea Bertha Sherman Llewellyn, who will be registering at SMK St Joseph, Kuching, also gave her reasons for deciding to enrol in Form Six.

“I decided to join Form Six so that I can continue my studies instead of staying at home while waiting for my university intake results, as a productive way to maintain my academic momentum,” she said.

She is mindful that the programme might  be tougher than what she faced during her earlier school days, and expects a more independent approach to studying.

“STPM has a reputation for being one of the toughest exams, so I expect it to be quite strict and rigorous.

“With it adopting a semester system now, I expect it will help me improve my time management skills and provide me with a glimpse of the university learning environment before pursuing higher education,” she added.

Andrea also shared her aspirations for the future, expressing her interest in pursuing a career in business administration or secretarial science.

“I have always preferred organised, desk-based work and handling behind the scenes stuff like paperwork or office management.

“I believe having strong administrative skills is super useful, and my goal is to eventually work in a stable corporate or office environment,” she said.

Overall, they collectively agree that the STPM pathway is a strategic step towards higher education and future careers, with Form Six acting as a bridge to university life and beyond.
