SHANGHAI: Bilateral ties between Sarawak and Shanghai will continue to be strengthened through strategic collaborations across various sectors, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.

Dr Sim said Shanghai’s economic strength aligns well with Sarawak’s aspirations to become the strongest economic region in Malaysia.

“To maintain this advantage, we require several key elements including sustainable energy, talent, technology, research and development (R&D), and more.

“Shanghai is a leading R&D hub in China,” he said after paying a courtesy call on Shanghai Mayor Gong Zheng at the Shanghai Jiushi Hengshan Grand Hotel today.

During the courtesy call, Gong Zheng shared that Shanghai is China’s leading logistics hub in the aviation, port, innovation, and R&D sectors, positioning it as the country’s largest economic hub.

“We also took the opportunity to share Sarawak’s aspirations to become a green energy hub including our ambitions in the R&D sector, especially in collaboration with Fudan University, medical schools, and other institutions,” added Dr. Sim.

He further noted that Gong Zheng expressed strong support for the collaboration between Shanghai Electric and Sarawak Energy in the development of green and renewable energy, as it would further enhance Sarawak’s opportunities in the sector.
