SIBU: A RM190,000 street lighting project has officially commenced in the Sungai Bidut and Sungai Sadit areas of Bawang Assan, benefiting several rural roads under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP).

The project covers Jalan Hua Lai, Jalan Guong Ming, Jalan Kwong Ting, Jalan Sing, Jalan Lan Lan and Jalan Kwong Hua here.

Chairman of SUPP Bawang Assan, Councillor Kevin Lau, said the street lighting project is now underway following earlier efforts by his team and local leaders.

“Yesterday I visited the site together with my team, engineers from Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB), and the appointed contractor to monitor the progress of the street lighting installation works,” he said in a statement on Friday.

“During the meeting, we had discussed with the engineers the precise locations for installing the street lights based on the actual conditions on site.”

He explained that the project followed a joint site survey with engineers from the Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC), which led to the submission and approval of the application last year.

“At the time, our team members and local community leaders, Kapitan Tang Chuo Ging and Kapitan Chew Hoo Kiong, accompanied the council engineers to identify the most suitable locations for the street lights,” he said.

Lau also thanked all agencies and individuals who helped bring the project to this stage, noting that it was made possible through a special RTP grant.

“The funding for the project was allocated under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) special grant approved by Premier Tan Sri Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg,” he added.

As installation works proceed, Lau reminded residents to be vigilant on the road.

“I urge road users to be extra cautious when travelling along the affected routes during the construction period for their safety.

“Moving forward, we will continue to work closely with SEB to monitor the project until its completion. We hope that once all the street lights are installed, they will provide a brighter and safer road environment for local residents and road users alike,” he said.
