KUCHING: Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister, Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, has emphasised on the importance of strengthening both Bahasa Melayu and English, describing bilingualism as a reflection of Sarawak’s inclusive and forward-looking character.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Premier of Sarawak Debate Challenge 2025 at the Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (CENTEXS) here today, Sagah said Bahasa Melayu serves as the language of unity and heritage, while English remains key to global knowledge and opportunities.

“Bahasa Melayu is our language of unity and heritage, while English opens doors to global knowledge, innovation, and opportunities. Both must be strengthened side by side,” he said.

He also commended the debate competition for promoting the use of both languages among students, adding that the programme helps shape articulate, confident and critical-thinking youth ready to lead the state with intellect and empathy.

Now in its third year, the Premier of Sarawak Debate Challenge has grown into a meaningful platform to nurture the next generation of Sarawakian leaders.

Sagah encouraged participants to continue learning and growing beyond the competition, stressing that curiosity – when guided by strong values – can be a powerful tool for self-improvement.

“There is a saying that curiosity kills the cat, but I believe that when curiosity is guided by the right values, it enhances knowledge, sharpens skills, and unlocks potential,” he said.

He also commended the Ministry, the Sarawak Education Department (JPNS), Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Sarawak, district education offices, teachers, judges, and parents for their contributions in making the event a success.

Sagah congratulated all winners and urged organisers to continue elevating the competition in the coming years.

“Let us continue to build a generation that speaks with wisdom, leads with heart, and acts with purpose,” he added.
