MUKAH: Skill development initiatives must continue to be strengthened to empower rural communities, enhance entrepreneurship and create a more competitive local economy.

Having said this, Deputy Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh said programmes such as the KEMAS Tanjung Manis Skills Day play an important role in ensuring rural residents have greater access to self-development opportunities and practical skills.

He said the programme, implemented under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), reflects the government’s commitment towards strengthening human capital development and the rural economic agenda in a more structured and systematic manner.

“This programme is not merely a departmental activity, but an inclusive platform that enables rural communities to improve themselves, master new skills and explore entrepreneurial opportunities.

“The participation of about 150 participants and the strong support from the surrounding Tanjung Manis community demonstrate the people’s eagerness to improve themselves and become more competitive through skills education,” he said in his closing speech for the programme.

Len Talif added that the skills acquired today should no longer be viewed merely as hobbies but as valuable tools that can generate income and build sustainable businesses.

During the programme, participants took part in various competitions, including a sewing category that showcased fashion creations inspired by Malaysia’s cultural heritage.

He commended the participants for displaying creativity, quality craftsmanship and products with commercial potential.

Len Talif also praised the collaboration between KEMAS and its strategic partners, saying such synergy enables government services and support systems to reach rural communities more effectively.

“Beyond providing skills training, we are also creating a support ecosystem covering aspects such as family health, financial assistance and comprehensive entrepreneurship guidance.

“Our ultimate goal is to establish a rural economy that is active, competitive and prosperous,” he said.
