KUCHING: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof has emphasised the urgent need for stronger political will, deeper technical cooperation, and smarter investment strategies to fully realise the Asean Power Grid (APG), a key initiative to drive regional energy integration.

Speaking at the welcoming dinner of the 43rd Senior Officials’ Meeting on Energy (SOME) and its associated meetings here on Monday, Fadillah said the APG is central to building a resilient and sustainable energy future across the region.

He said Malaysia is looking forward to the signing of the enhanced APG memorandum of understanding (MoU) and the endorsement of the Terms of Reference for the Subsea Power Cable Development Framework during the Asean Ministers on Energy Meeting in Kuala Lumpur this October.

“With growing economic and urban demand, the need for affordable, secure and sustainable energy is rising. The APG is not just an infrastructure project — it is a vision of seamless cross-border electricity flow, shared energy security and mutual prosperity,” said Fadillah, who is also the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation.

He stressed the importance of harmonised regulations, transparent markets, and digital innovation for real-time regional power trading.

“We must embrace both the physical infrastructure and the governance frameworks that underpin a unified power market,” he added.

Fadillah said the enhanced APG MoU and the upcoming Asean Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation 2026–2030 will significantly deepen connectivity and catalyse economic growth in the region.

He also welcomed the support of dialogue partners and international organisations in boosting renewable energy capacity, energy efficiency, and technology adoption for a low-carbon future.
