MIRI: Federal Higher Education Deputy Minister, Datuk Ts. Mustapha Sakmud, has called for stronger strategic partnerships between universities and industry players in Sarawak to ensure graduates are equipped with skills that meet market demands.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Industry Engagement Programme Zone Borneo Career Fair 2025 in Miri today, Mustapha emphasised that a more collaborative approach is essential to close the gap between academic training and industry expectations.

“To reduce disconnect between academia and industry needs, we must focus on key areas that will lead to meaningful employability among graduates,” he said.

He urged universities to open more opportunities for industry players to participate actively in curriculum development, particularly in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, sustainable energy, blockchain, automation and smart technologies.

“Early industry involvement is crucial. It helps us prepare a workforce that is not only technically competent but also industry-ready,” he stressed.

As part of efforts to strengthen these ties, three Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were exchanged during the ceremony.

Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) formalised collaborations with Samling Group, Iana Corporation Sdn Bhd, and the Miri branch of the Dewan Usahawan Bumiputera Sarawak.

The Deputy Minister noted that such agreements are vital stepping stones in forging practical, hands-on industry exposure for students as well as enhancing research-commercialisation efforts.

Moving forward, Mustapha called on more industries to take an active role in university ecosystems – from advisory roles in academic boards to providing industrial training placements and joint research ventures.

“Only by working hand-in-hand can we build a resilient and skilled talent pool that is ready to drive Malaysia’s future economy,” he added.

Also present at the event was UNIMAS Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr Ahmad Hata Rasit, who reiterated the university’s commitment to work closely with the private sector, and foster innovation and produce market-relevant talent.
