KUCHING: Sarawak football can close the gap with West Malaysian teams provided the right development structure is put in place, says former national footballer Joseph Kalang Tie
He said while talent remains abundant across Sarawak, it is the structure and long-term planning that will determine the state’s football future.
“Sarawak has many young players with passion and raw talent. But we need proper development, a clear structure, and a united effort from everyone who loves football here. If we can put that in place, I believe we can go far,” he said in an exclusive interview with Sarawak Tribune.
Now serving as the assistant coach for Kuching City FC’s youth team, Joseph said Sarawak must look forward and learn from the systems in place in West Malaysia, which he says are “many steps ahead” in terms of football infrastructure and planning.
“We are not behind because we lack effort or passion. We are behind because we started late. But it’s not too late.
“With the right leadership and unity, we can start to build something strong,” he said.
He also waxed lyrical about the current leadership of the Football Association of Sarawak (FAS), expressing optimism in its new direction under Tupong assemblyman Datuk Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman.
“Our new president has passion. He understands football. And with that kind of leadership, we have a real chance to move forward.”
He added that his role as assistant coach is about more than tactics, it is about inspiration.
“I always remind the boys: believe in yourselves. If we don’t believe in them, who will? We must be the first to trust and support our own.”
