KUCHING: ‘The Traditional Dance Workshop: Iban Ethnic’ concluded successfully on September 27, bringing together students from 16 schools, comprising 106 participants from Kuching region to celebrate and learn the richness of Sarawak’s indigenous heritage.
The closing ceremony, held at Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) headquarters here, was officiated by the Director of National Department for Culture and Arts (JKKN) Sarawak, Noor Seela Noor Sulaiman, who praised the organiser for preserving cultural traditions while engaging the younger generation.
Organising chairman, Kong Ying Ying, said the strong participation reflected the continued relevance of cultural heritage.
“This initiative is not only about learning dance steps, but also about cultivating pride in our roots and traditions,” she added.
The programme was made possible with funding sponsored by JKKN Sarawak.
“Participants were guided by experienced instructors, Dayang Norzaimah Abdul Latiff and Jackson Michael, who shared their knowledge of Iban culture.
“Students were taught unique rhythms, movements and symbolism of Iban traditional dance, based on the Iban practice and culture The workshop featured cultural sharing sessions, practical training, and culminated in a vibrant showcase performance,” she said.
A highlight of the closing ceremony was the official launch of the Unity Dance Challenge 2026, a national-level competition that will unite dancers across Malaysia through traditional, modern, ballet and contemporary genres.
“The event aims to provide a premier platform for young talents to showcase creativity while promoting cultural unity.
“The success of the workshop proved Kuching Unity Dance Association (KUDA)’s commitment in preserving Sarawak’s traditions while creating innovative platforms for the artist and art activities, especially the younger generations,” she added.
