KUCHING: University students have expressed strong support and appreciation for the continuation of the Special Financial Assistance (BKK) of RM1,200 for full-time degree and diploma students.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced the decision during a townhall session held in conjunction with Lan Berambeh Anak Sarawak 2025 on Saturday.

Introduced this year, the scheme aims to assist students from all economic backgrounds. The aid will be disbursed in two instalments of RM600 per semester, credited directly into students’ S PAY Global accounts throughout their studies.

Here’s what some of the students had to say about its implementation:

Avril Jewell

Avril Jewell Sema Stanley Sumping, 22, UNIMAS student:
“In my opinion, this assistance is helpful for students if it continues, but its effectiveness varies depending on each student’s circumstances. Some students living in big cities may find the amount insufficient due to high rent, food, and transportation costs.

“Meanwhile, students living with their families in rural areas may benefit more because of the lower cost of living. Nevertheless, I remain grateful to the Premier for continuing this assistance for the children of Sarawak.”

Dayang Fitriah

Dayang Fitri Nabilah, 22, UNIMAS student:
“In the current challenging economic situation, assistance like this can help students cover basic expenses such as transportation, food, and learning materials.

“Indirectly, it also serves as a moral boost for students to continue striving for academic excellence without being overly burdened by financial difficulties.”

Melvin Mclair

Melvin Mclair Tader Mojig, 24, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM):
“I am very grateful and happy for the decision that was made by the Premier. The SKAS financial aid that was provided this year came as a huge benefit for students, especially in the aspect of care and necessities—giving students less financial worry when it comes to answering the question of ‘will I be able to afford the next day’s meal?’

“The decision made by the state government to continue the financial aid programme for the next year is an action that proves that our government cares for the future of the state, starting with the young generation that is using education as a tool to improve living conditions here.”
