LIMBANG: Initial studies by Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (PETROS) indicate the presence of potential onshore oil and gas deposits in Limbang and Lawas, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He said PETROS is currently conducting a detailed study to confirm the findings.
“PETROS is now carrying out studies, and there is potential onshore. There are signs that Limbang may have gas deposits similar to Adong in Miri,” he told a press conference after officiating the Northern Coastal Highway here today.
According to him, PETROS has already been granted the licence to explore and undertake the greening of oil and gas resources in the region.
“The study is still ongoing, and hopefully, within a year to a year and a half, we will have the results,” he added.
On the proposed petrochemical project in Lawas, Abang Johari said its implementation would depend on the availability of gas supply from the exploration efforts.
“For the petrochemical project in Lawas, we need to ensure that we have the gas first. Once we do, it will pave the way for the growth of the petrochemical industry,” he said.
He added that several investment proposals have already been received for the project.
“There are already three proposals, including one from the Middle East in feasibility study,” he said.
