SAMARAHAN: Submission Grappling 2.0 has returned to the Rentap Fighting Championship during its seventh edition at the Summer Mall here.

In a statement, the organisers said the inclusion of submission grappling highlights their commitment to expanding combat sports opportunities beyond striking disciplines.

The submission grappling segment was organised by Hornbill Grappling BJJ, bringing together athletes from diverse backgrounds and experience levels during the event yesterday (Jan 18).

“A total of 14 bouts were contested throughout the day, featuring 27 participants — seven women and 20 men.

“The event demonstrated strong regional and international participation, with competitors representing local Malaysian teams, as well as athletes from Indonesia and Egypt, highlighting the growing reach and recognition of submission grappling within the region,” it said.

Throughout the day, athletes showcased high-level grappling techniques, discipline, and sportsmanship, drawing strong engagement from spectators at the mall.

The event also reinforced core values shared by both Rentap Fighting Championship and Hornbill Grappling BJJ, including respect, athlete safety, and community development through sport.

“Rentap Fighting Championship 7.0 was held with the approval of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Malaysia and sanctioned by the Sarawak Muaythai Association and Malaysia Muaythai Association, ensuring professional standards across all disciplines during the championship weekend.

“The broader event was supported by TVS as the main broadcaster, with backing from the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts (MTCP) Sarawak, Infightstyle as the official gear sponsor, and Kahf as the men’s grooming partner,” the statement added.

In addition to competition, the championship weekend also featured community-focused initiatives aimed at education and awareness.

Attendees participated in talks centred on youth development, anti-bullying, and child safety, reinforcing the organisers’ belief that combat sports play a positive role beyond the competition arena.
