SAMARAHAN: A total of 1,542 athletes and officials from 22 higher learning institutions will compete in the Higher Learning Institution Sports Games (SUKIPT) Sarawak 2025 at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) from October 23 to 26.
The event marks a historic milestone for UNIMAS as it hosts the championship for the first time in Sarawak.
Head of the Sports Section, Strategic Planning Division at the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT), Dr Hanafiah Ayup, said this edition of SUKIPT Sarawak 2025 reflects the ministry’s initiative to revive a competitive sports tournament specifically for athletes based in Sarawak.
“The ministry has taken the initiative to create a competitive sports tournament dedicated to athletes in Sarawak. This means, God-willing, the event will be held annually.

“This edition features seven sports and over 1,500 athletes, and I believe these numbers demonstrate great potential for the tournament to continue in the future on a larger scale,” he said.
He said this during the opening ceremony of the Sarawak SUKIPT 2025 held at Arena Gemilang, DeTAR PUTRA, UNIMAS, today.
The seven sports contested are e-sports, badminton, rugby, orienteering, futsal, sepak takraw, and netball – all of which will be held at world-class sports facilities at Arena Tun Tuanku Haji Bujang, UNIMAS.
Meanwhile, UNIMAS Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Professor Ir Ts Dr Al-Khalid Othman, warmly welcomed contingents from across Sarawak.
“We at UNIMAS are truly honoured to welcome all of you. SUKIPT is not merely a sports competition but also a platform for holistic development, instilling values of discipline, resilience, teamwork and leadership among students,” he said.
At the same time, he expressed confidence that the tournament provides an excellent opportunity for young athletes to expand their networks and further develop their talents.
