KOTA SAMARAHAN: Sarawak’s Higher Education Institutions Sports (SUKIPT) 2026 is set to bring together 2,000 participants from 28 higher education institutions (IPTs) as student athletes statewide compete for the championship title.
In line with the Ministry of Higher Education’s (MOHE) Sports Policy for the Borneo Cluster, the prestigious tournament aims to achieve two key objectives, which is increasing competitive sporting opportunities at the IPT level and nurturing Thinking Athletes among students.
Universiti Malaysia Sarawak’s (UNIMAS) Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), who is also the organising committee chairman, Professor Dr Al-Khalid Othman said the state-level tournament is not merely a regular competition but serves as a platform for identifying potential talents among university students.
“The main focus of UNIMAS and MOHE is to ensure every athlete delivers their best performance.
“This is the competitive selection platform before carrying the challenge of their respective institutions to the SUKIPT Malaysia Games scheduled from Aug 28 to Sept 6, 2026,” he said.
He said this after the Joint Contingent Coordination Meeting with KPT held at the Main Meeting Room, UNIMAS Chancellery Building, according to a UNIMAS statement issued today (July 12).
He added that this year’s edition recorded full participation from all 28 IPT contingents in Sarawak, comprising athletes, accompanying officers, volunteers and technical officials.
Hosted by UNIMAS in collaboration with the MOHE, the tournament will be held over four days from July 30 until Aug 3, and feature eight competitive sporting events for supporters and sports enthusiasts.
The eight sports to be contested are futsal, netball, rugby 7s, petanque, sepak takraw, e-sports (PUBG and MLBB), badminton and orienteering.
The competitions will be held at two main venues equipped with quality sports facilities, namely UNIMAS and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Sarawak Branch, Samarahan Campus.
