KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor will proceed with hosting the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) as scheduled, following the consent of Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports said His Royal Highness agreed for the Games to be held from Aug 15 to 24 with cost-saving measures and prudent spending, following an audience with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on April 23.

Minister of Youth and Sports Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari expressed gratitude for the consent and thanked the Prime Minister for prioritising young athletes in the decision to proceed.

“SUKMA 2026 serves as a key platform for selecting and preparing young athletes to represent Malaysia at the SEA Games, which will be held here next year,” he said in a statement.

He added that discussions had been held with Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari, who pledged full cooperation to ensure smooth organisation of the Games.

Mohammed Taufiq also said he will have an audience with the Sultan on April 29, together with state executive councillors, to present updates on preparations.

The SUKMA Selangor 2026 Secretariat is expected to present the latest updates, particularly on cost-saving measures, at a special Supreme Committee meeting this Thursday.

Further details on the Games will be announced after the meeting.

Earlier, Sultan Sharafuddin had suggested postponing SUKMA 2026 until the West Asia crisis subsides and the redevelopment of Shah Alam Stadium is completed. – BERNAMA
