KUCHING: The upcoming Malaysia Games (SUKMA) XXII will implement a series of strategic cost-management measures, including the potential use of chartered flights and AirBorneo, to ensure the event proceeds without compromising athletes’ performance.

Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, revealed that the state is exploring alternative logistics and accommodation solutions to navigate current economic pressures.

Aside from specialised flight arrangements, the ministry is considering prioritising budget hotels and decentralising contingent housing to manage expenses effectively.

“Costs such as transportation and accommodation will need to be managed carefully, but we will find ways to ensure participation continues smoothly,” Abdul Karim said after chairing the State Tourism Steering Committee meeting at the Sheraton Hotel today (Apr 10).

Abdul Karim reaffirmed that while the “belt-tightening” is necessary, it would not disrupt the high standards required for competition.

“We still aim for a strong performance. These cost controls will not disrupt our preparations,” he assured, noting that elite training programmes are ongoing, including the state wushu squad currently in Tianjin, China.
