MIRI: Sarawak celebrated a landmark moment as SUKMA XXI Sarawak 2024 ended on an overwhelmingly successful note on Aug 24, cementing the state’s status as the best host ever in the event’s history.
Despite numerous challenges, including tight preparation timelines, the event ran seamlessly, thanks to the unwavering cooperation of all involved, said Deputy State Secretary (Operations) Datuk Hii Chang Kee during an appreciation dinner held for SUKMA XXI volunteers here on Tuesday night (Nov 25).
Also present was Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
Highlighting Sarawak’s triumph as host, the state contingent also emerged as the overall champion, securing their fourth championship title with an impressive medal haul: 76 gold, 55 silver, and 70 bronze.
“As the chief executive officer of SUKMA XXI Sarawak 2024, I extend my heartfelt gratitude and congratulations to the divisional secretariats, the 25 working committees, and the 17,864 committee staff, along with 3,000 volunteers. Their extraordinary dedication and commitment have been the cornerstone of this success,” said Hii.
SUKMA XXI 2024 made history as the largest edition to date, featuring 37 sports and 488 gold medals contested across nine divisions in Sarawak.
“Despite having only 18 months to prepare, the teamwork and collaboration across all parties ensured that the event not only met but exceeded expectations,” Hii added.
Key initiatives, including the SUKMA launching ceremony, state and international courtesy visits, a Baton Run across 12 Sarawak divisions, and sponsor appreciation events, were successfully implemented to promote the games.
Hii emphasised that this unparalleled cooperation and meticulous planning have firmly established Sarawak as a benchmark for future SUKMA hosts.
“Your hard work and commitment have made a lasting impact, proving once again that Sarawak is capable of hosting large-scale events with excellence.”
The northern region appreciation dinner served as a moment of reflection and celebration for the monumental efforts that made SUKMA XXI Sarawak 2024 an unforgettable chapter in the event’s history.
