KUCHING: Boxing at the Sarawak Games (SUKSAR) IV 2026 is expected to help uncover new talent and accelerate the development of the sport across Sarawak.
The event is not only seen as a platform for boxers from the four competing teams – the Northern Zone, Western Zone, Central Zone and Southern Zone – especially emerging talents, to showcase their abilities.
Sarawak Amateur Boxing Association (SABA) President, Datuk Rahman Lariwoo, said the inclusion of boxing is also regarded as one of the best approaches to further stimulate the development of close-combat sports in the state.
“It is a very timely move with the organisation of SUKSAR IV 2026, as it indirectly helps to further energise the boxing development programme in Sarawak,” he said when contacted recently.
Rahman believes many talented boxers will emerge from the competing teams this time, covering various weight categories.
He added that SABA will closely monitor boxers from all four teams during the competition.
According to him, SUKSAR IV 2026 will serve as an ideal platform for SABA to identify promising boxers to be selected into Sarawak’s future development squad.
The SUKSAR IV 2026 Games will take place over seven days in two divisions, Sri Aman and Betong, featuring competition among four teams: the Southern Zone (Kuching, Kota Samarahan, Serian), the Western Zone (Sarikei, Betong, Sri Aman), the Central Zone (Sibu, Mukah, Kapit), and the Northern Zone (Bintulu, Miri, Limbang).
A total of 11 sports will be contested, with seven – table tennis, basketball, karate, softball, sepak takraw, petanque and boxing – being held in Sri Aman.
Meanwhile, the remaining four sports – weightlifting, cycling, netball and taekwondo – will take place in Betong.
