MURUM: The proposed upgrade of Sungai Asap Sub-District into the Apau Koyan District is more than just an administrative move – it fulfils a long-standing personal aspiration of Murum assemblyman, Kennedy Chukpai Ugon.

Kennedy said he has long envisioned Apau Koyan being elevated into a full district, noting that such a move would significantly enhance administrative capacity and pave the way for faster and more effective development for the people.

“On a personal note, this has long been one of my aspirations – to see Apau Koyan elevated into a full district with stronger administrative capacity, enabling faster and more effective development for the benefit of the rakyat,” he said in a press statement on Thursday (March 19).

He also welcomed and expressed full support for the Sarawak government’s proposal, describing it as a timely and people-centric initiative.

Kennedy extended his appreciation to the Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for the decision, saying it reflects the government’s continued commitment to ensuring inclusive and balanced development across the state, particularly in rural and interior areas.

He noted that the proposal is in line with the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), especially in advancing rural development, strengthening local economies, and enhancing the delivery of government services.

“The proposed upgrade carries great significance for residents in Sungai Asap, Apau Koyan and surrounding areas in Murum.

“The move would not only change the administrative status of the area but also serve as a transformative step to strengthen local governance, accelerate service delivery, and improve access to essential infrastructure such as roads, healthcare and education,” he said.

He said it would also open up new economic opportunities for local communities.

Expressing confidence in the leadership of the Premier, Kennedy said the initiative would act as a catalyst for growth in the interior regions, in line with the state government’s aspiration of ensuring that no one is left behind in Sarawak’s development journey.

“As the elected representative of Murum constituency, I remain fully committed to supporting the government’s efforts to ensure that this initiative is successfully implemented for the benefit of the people,” he said.

He described the proposal as a long-awaited aspiration for the people of Murum that is now becoming a reality.

In conjunction with the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Kennedy also extended his greetings to all Sarawakians, wishing them “Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Maaf Zahir dan Batin”.
